Fascist-Islamism. Could be a growing menace of war/violence/terror/destruction going forward.
Not sure how it will play out, but it is hell over there in Syria and Iraq.
Things are intertwined and complicated and very fascinating. It is a very fascinating point in the world right now. I think 9/11 has defined this century so far, but I think there is more to come. We have to stand for peace and tolerance.

It's a super complicated issue...but one thing is for certain. The Middle East has be war-torn and repeated devastated since at least 2500 BC. I have in my mind, a series of consecutive events since then, that every couple of centuries or so, completely destroying everything in that area. It's way before Islam. The religion is not the cause, but an expression of that region historically; and despite this, we can thank them for inventing civilization as we know it.

We can also thank them for the invention of the written word, allowing communication to transcend space and time as we are doing at this every moment.

The Islamic caliphates had a long and glorious run, but in the 21st century, they seemed consigned to history. Simply put, a caliphate is an Islamic state led by a supreme religious and political leader, and it has existed in one form or another for most of the 1,400-year history of Islam. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire a century ago marked the end of the last caliphate, an extraordinarily powerful one that had survived for more than four centuries. But on Sunday, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria declared it was re-establishing a caliphate that will be headed by its shadowy leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It's a bold propaganda ploy, because a caliphate seeks dominion over the world's Sunni Muslims, who make up the vast majority of the roughly 1.5 billion Muslims around the globe.

The biggest problem with al-Baghdadi's brand of fascism, is that it doesn't reflect the Islamic Golden age. Essentially, the period before the Mongol sacking/rape of Baghdad, the Islamic world was the hottest thing on the planet. Far different than the puritanical ish he's spewing.

The problem with this new caliphate, which, an ISIS spokesman claimed on Sunday, had been established under Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, an Islamist militant leader since the early days of the American occupation of Iraq, is that it is ahistorical, to say the least.

The Abbasid caliphate, for example, which ruled from 750 to 1258, was an impressively dynamic and diverse empire. Centered in Baghdad, just down the road from where ISIS is occupying large areas of Iraq, the Abbasid caliphate was centuries ahead of Mr. Baghdadi’s backward-looking cohorts. Abbasid society during its heyday thrived on multiculturalism, science, innovation, learning and culture — in sharp contrast to ISIS’ violent puritanism. The irreverent court poet of the legendary Caliph Harun al-Rashid (circa 763-809), Abu Nuwas, not only penned odes to wine, but also wrote erotic gay verse that would make a modern imam blush.

Centered on the Bayt al-Hikma, Baghdad’s “House of Wisdom,” the Abbasid caliphate produced notable advances in the sciences and mathematics. The modern scientific method itself was invented in Baghdad by Ibn al-Haytham, who has been called “the first true scientist.”
